About the Creation
“Violet Kamcheng” is a watercolor gem skillfully blending impressionism and realism. The painting captures the elegance of a ‘kamcheng’, a covered container with a tub-like shape and dome-shaped cover set against a vibrant violet background. The artist meticulously details a standing Buddhist lion-dog atop the cover, with opposing blue lion-dog masks as ring handles. The central motif features large sprays of red-pink peonies, emphasizing the intricacy of this traditional piece. The ‘kamcheng’ not only served practical purposes, holding water, pickles, and food, but also held cultural significance in Peranakan Chinese wedding ceremonies, playing a role in the twelve days of celebration for the bride and groom.
